On Tuesday, March 27, 1973, angry students from the University of Ife, broke into a National Education Policy seminar being held on their campus and brought the proceedings to a standstill. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hezekiah Adedunmola Oluwasanmi, stood by helplessly while the demonstrators rampaged. . The students were protesting against the recently introduced National Youth Service Corps, aimed at creating a pool of skilled manpower for national projects, especially in rural areas. Similar dist¥rbance also h!t Lagos University, where students took over their campus. During the demonstrations, university buildings were d and furniture d£str0yed, while several students were arrested. . In an attempt to reach the Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as he drove through Lagos, demonstrators cI with police and b¥rned government and army vehicles.
